BQ-5204 Strike Selfie – budget smartphone for photo enthusiasts

Now smartphone from the Russian brand BQ Mobile – BQ-5204 Strike Selfie – was on sale. The smartphone is noteworthy in that it has 2 high-quality cameras for 16 and 13 megapixels, controlled by a separate touch-sensitive button, while its price is below 6,000 rubles. In the rest it is an excellent average in a metal case, but about everything in order.

Specifications are as follows:
• Display: 5.2 inch 2.5D IPS 1280 × 720
• Operating system: Android 7.0 Nougat
• Processor: MediaTek MT6580, 4 cores, 1300 MHz
• RAM: 1 GB
• Built-in memory: 8 GB + slot for microSD memory cards up to 128 GB
• Mobile connection: 2G, 3G
• Radio modules: WiFi b / g / n, Bluetooth 4.0
• Number of SIM slots: 2
• Camera resolution: front 13 Mp / rear 16 Mp SONY Sensor
• Battery: 2500 mAh, removable
• Dimensions: 145 × 73 × 8.9 mm, weight: 164 g.

Like other BQ smartphones, the novelty is packaged in a well recognizable, attractive red box. The equipment is also typical – charger, cable, instructions and already glued protective film on the smartphone screen.

The smartphone is available in four color options: pink, gold, black and gray. In our case, this is a black color. The smartphone looks very stylish and in the hand it feels like a more expensive model. Not least this feeling is due to the metal casing and a very noticeable weight. From the older brother of the BQ-5504 Strike Selfie Max, it differs by only a few grams, with it has a smaller diagonal and a more compact size.
The controls and connectors are standard, but there is an interesting sensor on the back cover under the camera. For the first time I saw it, I thought it was a fingerprint scanner, but it turned out to be much more interesting – it’s a touch control that allows you to unlock the smartphone and start the camera, take pictures and switch from the main camera to the front camera.
Initially, in the settings of the work of this module, I was disconnected, which made me even more confused. The settings of the smartphone fully describe all the gestures of control with the possibility of full or partial shutdown.

The back cover is similar to the model 5504 – removable, but under it already removable battery capacity 2500 mAh, 2 slots for cards format Micro-SIM and a slot for memory cards MicroSD. Officially declared support for the work of cards with a capacity of 64 GB, but the smartphone coped well with the card 128 GB.

Built-in memory in the smartphone is only 8 GB of which more than half is occupied by the operating system, so installing additional memory will be highly desirable.
RAM 1 GB. By today’s standards, this is not enough, but there are enough interfaces and applications to work. Noticeable visual pauses start when you use a large number of running applications along with some heavy game. Games, to the surprise, do not work badly. Even Asphalt feels more smoothly than the more productive Mali650MP2.

The BQ-5204 operates on a 32-bit MTK6580 chip. The processor consists of 4 cores with the architecture ARMv7-A (VFPv4, NEON), built using 28 nm technology. The core frequency varies between 420-1300MHz. The graphics are already answered by the rather old Mali-400MP, supporting hardware encoding/decoding of 1080p 30fps. The performance of the processor is similar to such chips as Snapdragon 400 and Samsung Exynos 4412.

The smartphone received a 5.2-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels with 2.5D effect (with curved edges). The framework for the budget model is very compact. Touch buttons are displayed under the screen, but they are noteworthy in that they are indicated by usual points. In the settings of the smartphone, you can switch the modes of these buttons, or rather, their location. If you are used to the button on the left or, conversely, on the right, there are no problems with switching. Earlier with such an implementation did not encounter and the idea I really liked.

Above the screen is a 13MP front camera with LED backlight/flash. On the back there is a 16-megapixel sensor from SONY. The cameras are being photographed well, especially given the ridiculous cost of the smartphone, but one feels that there is not enough software optimization. The frames could be even better.

As in the BQ-5204 Strike Selfie , there are a number of interesting presets and filters in the camera application that help to get the best shot. Among such modes, the front camera has: 720p video recording, a beautiful face (with adjustable anti-aliasing modes), a portrait and even a panorama.

The battery has a capacity of 2500 mAh, which at first glance is very small, given the far from new processor implemented using 28 nm technology, but the results of the tests were very ambiguous.

All tests were conducted with the Internet turned on, WiFi, mobile communication in the 3G network (Tele2), synchronization and brightness in 50%. Under maximum load, the smartphone will last only 5-6 hours. In the video player mode, this figure is barely below 9 hours.

But in the mode of minimal use, only rare calls and receiving of notifications (in fact, as a usual “dialer”, but with constantly on-line Internet), the smartphone threatens to last 16 days! For the sake of justice it is worth noting that he worked 13 days and then I did not wait, and so too long the experiment turned out.
Initially, when the smartphone lay for 5 days and showed the minimum charge, I did not believe it and decided to wait for the “sudden end of the charge”, but it took another 2 days, and then another 3 and more … As a result, 13 days and 19% which, according to the calculations of Android, should be enough for 3 days. Very impressive and some incredible result. As it was achieved in the company BQ for me a mystery.

The smartphone is running on the new operating system Android 7.0. If you believe the rumors, the entire lineup will be updated to Android 8.0. If this is so, then this will be another huge plus in the treasury of this budget device.

The only thing you can find fault with is to 1 GB of RAM. This model would have another gigabyte and sales would bring it to the bestsellers.
