Review and Testing of the ASUS VivoBook S15: A Golden Gem

Do you like the concept of modern ultra-compact laptops? You do that is excellent news…

You must agree that the modest dimension and weight offers you mobility. Furthermore, the hardware allows you work comfortably and provides you the best entertainment.

At the same time, they look very beautiful and presentable, which is also important in the modern world. However, the price tag for the best laptop is not available to everyone. This is something ASUS understands. They have made it possible for you to buy an affordable device the ASUS VivoBook S15 (S510UQ.)

We received this fine piece of equipment with a light and thin case, inside you have the Intel Core i5 / i7 processors that run Intel Kaby Lake or Intel Coffee Lake. The laptop comes with a mobile NVIDIA GeForce 940MX video card. The amount of RAM can reach 16 GB, and the disk subsystem includes a bunch of HDD and SSD with a capacity of 2 TB and 512 GB, respectively.

We suggest you take a closer look at this model.

Contents of Box

The ASUS VivoBook you receive in a large sized cardboard box. On the outside of the box is the basic information related to the S15 displayed on a sticker. On the side of the box, you have the key features. For ease of carrying ASUS placed a convenient handle to transport the laptop. Inside we found only the laptop itself and a charger with a non-replaceable cable. You can complete the set by purchasing a bag and mouse extra.

Design

The ASUS VivoBook S15 has a familiar design compared to other top laptop brands available these days. Additionally, it is similar to their ZenBook line. The device has a smooth and thin profile.

First, the body of the units made of plastic, and skillfully disguised as anodized aluminum. On the working area, it is a little rough, on the base is a soft-touch coating, and around the display, there is a simple matte black finish. Secondly, on the cover of the display itself, there is only a coarse metallic grinding pattern. Judging by the photo from the official website of the manufacturer, the laptop is available in gold and gray.

During our testing, the laptop had no problems with delivery a great working experience or concerns when transported. The case is compact enough and not very heavy: 361.4 x 243.5 x 17.9 mm and 1.7 kg. For comparison: the ASUS ZenBook UX530UQ dimensions are 360.2 x 246 x 16.95 mm, and the weight – 1.63 kg.

The S15 has a sophisticated and modern look and has a frame of following sizes: 8 mm from the side, 14 mm from the top and 25 mm from the bottom.

The display units placed in a customary wide shelf hinge. It is quite tight and provides an excellent fixation of the lid. To move it with one hand is problematic, but it possible. In addition, for ease, there is a ledge on the front panel. The maximum opening angle is about 135 °, which is quite enough for most users, whether on the table or on the lap.

Despite the rather slim body, the owners of the ASUS VivoBook S15 have no shortage of I/O ports. You can find all of them placed on the side face. On the right, there is a combined 3.5 mm audio jack, USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C, HDMI, USB 3.0 ports and a power connector. On the opposite side is a pair of USB 2.0 ports, a card reader, and a set of alarm LEDs.

The base has a solid cover, on which there are two pairs of large rubber legs and a perforation, under which the stereo speakers hidden. Having unscrewed the 12-cross screws, two of which are under the far legs, and a couple of plastic latches, you find the important hardware.

You will note that the two drivers drives (M.2 and 2.5-inch formats), RAM slots and a wireless module is replaceable. This allows you to extend the life cycle of the device if at first you did not choose the maximum configuration.

Regarding the material and components used, we had no complaints. The laptop looks and feels good. The case is durable but when pressed on the display cover the base keyboard flexes slightly, which is hardly noticeable under normal operating conditions.

Input Features

The laptop has a traditional full-size ASUS keyboard (301 x 102 mm) without an extra digital unit. The upper row of the [F] key and the function button blocks combined to activate in combination with the [FN] key, which for convenience are two at a time. The symbol elements laser engraved in a single color design with a bright and uniform two-level lighting (if you want you can turn it off). The touchpad is huge (105 x 73.5 mm) and great if you prefer not using a mouse. On its smooth surface, the finger glides pleasantly, and the handling is great. In the upper right corner of the touch panel is a fast and accurate fingerprint scanner.

Added Accessories

The ASUS VivoBook S15 S510UQ is equipped with a 15.6-inch matte IPS-screen, which, depending on the modifications differs in resolution – 1366 x 768 (HD) or 1920 x 1080 (Full HD). We received the 2nd option, based on the LG LP156WF9-SPK2 matrix.

The pixel density and resolution is 141 PPI, which is enough to get a good image detail. However, the display is not capable of offering professional-grade color rendering used in photo editing. However, for work and entertainment, it is enough.

The level of maximum brightness is sufficient for comfortable working inside. However, using the laptop outdoors might be a bit problematic. The minimum level is quite comfortable in the dark.

Outcomes

The ASUS VivoBook S15 (S510UQ) is nearly a twin of the ASUS ZenBook UX530UQ. Unlike its older brother, the device offers durable construction with a simple display. Nevertheless, the laptop looks presentable and should please you with its compact design and IPS-screen that is perfect to use indoors.

The VivoBook S15 is an affordable model and you can customize it with modern components. Thanks to the current hardware, the laptop feels balanced and perfectly copes with work and games. The battery life is not one of the best and lasts about 4-5 hours.

In general, the ASUS VivoBook S15 is a good option if you do not have the money for top brands. If the manufacturer manages to keep the attractive price, the laptop might gain a wide popularity from different users.
