Review UMIDIGI Crystal: A New Sensational Frameless Smartphone

UMIDIGI Crystal gives new ambiance to mobile users. These are not just words. The reality is the phone offers you three sides of a frameless 5.5-inch display to enjoy the best mobile experience. The inside of the units stuffed with decent hardware from the 4GB of RAM to the dual main camera. It has a large screen with a thin casing comprising a metal frame. The phone is currently selling for 170 bucks. To find out more about this phone read our UMIDIGI Crystal Review that follows here

Design

The UMIDIGI Crystal Smartphone has a bright and glossy finish available in black. The great thing about the design is there is no inserts, silver metal or halftones present.

The entire device has rounded 2.5D panels. In fact, there is no frame found on three of the sides. The thickness is only a couple of millimeters, but because they are not only on the sides, you can actually observe it from above as well. You can really feel the innovation and technology used in the smartphone.

The weight is a bit on the hefty side and weighs in at 180 g, with dimensions of 141.3 x 74.8 x 8.1 mm. The Smartphone has a complete metal casing with a glass display.

The rim has a matte finish and the sides connected well without flaws. On the back, under the cameras, there is a fingerprint scanner. To use the scanner quickly might be a bit of a problem and installed level with the lid.

Between it and the panel is a thin plastic bezel. The response speed does not exceed 0.3 s. Furthermore, you cannot customize the functionality of the scanner to perform with third-party software.

Hardware

There are no hardware or touch buttons present and available directly on the display screen. The LED indicator lights built in the form of a white highlighted bar.

There is an illumination sensor present with a 3.5 mm audio output. On the left side you can find buttons and on the right, you have access to a SIM card tray.

At the bottom, there is a space for speakers and a microphone. The sound is excellent compared to other top Smartphone brands.

Summing up the body, we can say that the phones assembled at the highest level, and you cannot find fault with the materials used. Therefore, in order to protect the body and keep it in a brand new condition, I recommend you use a durable Smartphone cover.

Included in the box

You can buy different cases made from silicone from the manufactures specially made for the UMIDIGI Crystal. In the box with the phone, you can find a paper clip, a 5V / 1A charger, a USB Type-C cable, a protective film, and soft microfiber cloth to clean the screen before gluing the accessory.

Display

The Crystal model received a display that covers 88% of its front side. It has IPS matrix with a SHARP 5.5-inch screen and Full HD resolution (1920 × 1080). Viewing angles and behavior in the sun are standard. Furthermore, it offers you eye protection (LiveDisplay) and white balance adjustments. You can set the brightness automatically or manually.

They used Gorilla Glass 4 and have an oleophobic layer. The screen is difficult to clean around the edges.

In general, the screen is good and it has 5 multitouch supports you can touch simultaneously.

Performance

The Smartphones powered by an 8-core MediaTek MTK6750T processor with a 1.5 GHz frequency. It also has a Graphic Mali-T860 MP2 chip.

The RAM is 4 GB, and the built-in memory is 64 GB. The phone is available in a 2 GB RAM/16 GB RAM version and can be considered the most affordable 5 x 5-inch frameless Smartphone on the market.

However, note the processor used in this model is more modest and comprise a 4-core MTK6737T with the Mali-T720 MP2 graphics.

You can use a memory card up to 256GB or attach a USB flash drive to the phone and supports OTG.

When testing the UMIDIGI Crystal with an AnTuTu tester it scores 44073 points for a quick startup and works immediately in all the applications.

Questions related to launching Full HD videos, demanding graphics or arcade automotive 3D simulators do not fare well. The device runs on Android 7.0 without branded or third party launchers and interfaces.

Interesting and Useful program:

  • The translation of the display into a reduced display format for ease of one-handed operation (Swipe left to right at the bottom of the display)
  • Setting the LED backlight on main events
  • Blocking automatic startup when starting selected applications
  • Setting functions and placing of the on-screen buttons and power buttons

There is, however, some concern about the firmware related to stability and using 3rd-party apps, the manufacturer promised to solve this issue with their next firmware update.

The standard of wireless data transmission is limited to 2.4 GHz – Wi-Fi IEEE802.11 a / b / g / n. The phone has Bluetooth 4.0 technology.

When tested the Smartphone supports 2G (GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz), 3G (WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz) and 4G (LTE FDD 2100/1800/2600/800 MHz) networks. The port for two nanoSIM cards present and you can insert a memory card into one of them if necessary.

There were times we noticed a lack of signal reception. Furthermore, there was interference when listening to music through Bluetooth headphones. In addition, the phone loses signal over a long distance.

However, I’m not going to complain about GPS reception even in conditions of dense urban development and works perfectly. There is also a Glonass chip present.

Battery

The battery installed in the UMIDIGI Crystal is only 3000 mAh. According to them is perfect for using in standby mode for up to 10 days without recharging.

The actual flow during basic operations is as follows:

  • YouTube (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth audio, 100% brightness) – 14% for 30 minutes or 100% for 3 hours 40 minutes
  • Player video (sound on Bluetooth, brightness 100%) -11% for 30 minutes or 100% for 4 hours 35 minutes
  • Player video (sound via Bluetooth, brightness 5-10%) -4% for 30 minutes or 100% for 12 hours
  • Game Asphalt Extreme (brightness 50%) -12% for 30 minutes or 100% for 4 hours 10 minutes

The power saving mode is standard for any type of Android. There is no fast charging function provided, but from the docking station to 9V/2A, the Smartphone receives a charge much faster than the charger from the kit. Charging the battery from 0 to 100% with a regular accessory takes at least 2.5 hours.

Cameras

For the main camera unit, they used two Samsung mediums the 13 and 5 megapixels. The pictures are of good quality. The setting, however, is only 9 megapixels. In daylight, the pictures and videos captured well. See the examples of the content below. There are no complaints about the autofocus, but in poor lighting, it does not capture the desired object immediately.

The front camera is only a 5-megapixel camera. The content it generates is of medium quality, and in sunny weather, it “blurs.” However, for communication in instant messengers, this is enough, because there is a restriction in the video recording and only available in VGA format.

Conclusion

The UMIDIGI Crystal model brought with it different emotions when used. With the absence of the frame, you can observe more of the surrounding area while carrying a small Smartphone in your hand. The screens convenient to use and offers a minimal sound. I recommend adding Crystal to the list of your desired purchases, especially if you need a frameless Smartphone with an excellent design. The battery life expectancy is great for a full day’s work.
